Ancient, heroic, modern: Brest marks its 998th anniversary
29 Jul 2017

The 1000th anniversary of Brest is literally around the corner. The event is highly anticipated by Brest citizens and visitors who have fallen in love with this amazing border city. In the run-up to the millennium Brest is becoming more beautiful and comfortable. It continues to amaze us with new projects making the city life more fun.

Brest authorities chose September as the month to celebrate the city’s millennium. However, according to a longstanding tradition, Brest marks the City Day in July in honor of the liberation from the Nazi invadors. This year is no exception.

The Berestye 2017 celebrations marking the city’s 998th anniversary lasted for four days and included dozens of events, from traditional to brand new ones that can become an integral part of the calendar. They are the much-loved Beresteisky Ball and a carnival procession, the milk festival, the Reading Boulevard book fair, an exhibition of retro vehicles, an arts and crafts fair, a concert of Brest’s talents and guests, sports competitions... The city also hosted a festival of twins and a festival of flowers Colors of Brest for the first time ever.
