Belarusian fans had big hopes on Greco-Roman wrestling at Rio 2016. The country is proud of its strong wrestling traditions and victories. However, the Belarusian wrestlers returned medal-less from London 2012 although three of them participated in bronze-medal fights. The Belarusians were looking forward to the wrestling competitions in Brazil, and Javid Hamzatov did not disappoint them and won a medal. In the men’s 85kg the Belarusian with Dagestani roots defeated Bulgaria's Nikolay Bayryakov 4-1 to claim bronze.
