The Augustow Canal Museum in the Dombrovka Sluice caretaker’s house

The Augustow Canal Museum in the Dombrovka Sluice caretaker’s house
23 May 2016

A new exposition was opened in the renovated Dombrovka Sluice caretaker’s house. The biggest amount of the rarities was donated by the Grodno History and Archeology Museum and private collectors. The exposition tells the history of Augustow Canal, its construction, the military, trade and tourism past, and a large-scale reconstruction of the Belarusian section of the canal. A number of the exhibits were found during the restoration. Among them were the device for measuring the depth, household items, weapons and uniforms of soldiers of the two world wars.

Historical rarities and furniture in the living room and the kitchen help visitors imagine what the life was there a century ago. A large-scale mock-up shows how the sluices of the canal functioned and what cargoes went through the canal.

In the near future, the museum will be turned into a museum complex to include the caretaker’s house, authentic buildings and a yard.
