Victory Day: Remembrance festival near the Mound of Glory

The victorious May of 1945, recollections of the most tragic and bloody war that has scarred every Belarusian family, respect for the steadfastness and courage of the nation… This May entire Belarus celebrates the 71st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

A major celebration took place in Minsk Oblast – the country’s central region – in honor of Victory Day on 6 May. The venue was not accidental: the Mound of Glory is dedicated to the courage and bravery of the soldiers of four army frontlines and underground resistance fighters, who liberated Belarus. It has been one of the most recognizable memorials and symbols of the Great Victory for many years. The land for the mound has been brought to Minsk from all over Belarus, from the hero cities of Moscow, Leningrad, Volgograd, Sevastopol, Odessa, Kiev, and the legendary Brest Hero Fortress…

The festivities near the Mound of Glory brought together about 1,500 guests from all over Minsk Oblast. A solemn rally involving Great Patriotic War veterans, representatives of government agencies and the parliament, school and university students took place in the central square of the memorial. The celebration continued with the concert Victorious May! Blossoming May! and an airshow by the Minsk aeroclub of DOSAAF (the Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Fleet).

For the entire day various thematic areas were open to the visitors: One Victory For All involving amateur artists of the oblast, a sports area, exhibitions of technical arts and aircraft models, the photo area Connecting the Generations…
