On 19 March Belarus joined, for the eighth time, the international environmental campaign Earth Hour. The capital Minsk, regional centers and other cities and towns of the country switched off at 20.30 illumination of public buildings, shopping centers, restaurants and cafes, universities, and also lighting streets and advertising illumination. Many of the Belarusians supported the initiative of the World Wildlife Fund by turning off light and appliances at home for at least for one hour.
Minsk contributed to the campaign by turning off the lights on the National Library, the Minsk City Hero Memorial, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the City’s Gate in the Privokzalnaya Square and the capital’s main thoroughfares – Independence and Pobeditelei Avenues.
