The Year of Culture calendar includes many events dedicated to Ivan Shamyakin. The first celebrations were held at his birthplace in Dobrush District, Gomel Oblast.

On 6 February a commemorative plaque was unveiled in Ivan Shamyakin’s native village of Korma. The plaque was placed on a wall of the library named after the writer. Partaking in the ceremony was Belarus’ Culture Minister Boris Svetlov and Director General of the National Art Museum Vladimir Prokoptsov.

A renewed exposition was opened at the Dobrush local history museum in honor of the famous writer. The National Art Museum loaned paintings by 15 artists, including the portrait of Ivan Shamyakin made by Ninel Schastnaya 30 years ago, to Dobrush for two months. Among the exhibits are photos from the family albums of Ivan Shamyakin’s relatives.
