Events to commemorate 100th anniversary of WWI in Postavy
The events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War were held in Postavy District, Vitebsk Oblast on 30 September. That was the place where the frontline stabilized in October 1915. The Russian troops launched the Naroch Offensive, one of the bloodiest on the Eastern Front, in March 1916. They faced terrible weather conditions, no roads and poor support from the artillery. As a result, they achieved small tactical success but suffered heavy losses (more than 1000 officers and over 77,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, gone missing...)
The events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the end of the war started with the “The Echo of the Great War” exhibition in the Postavy Regional Museum of Local Lore. On display are rarities from private collections (equipment, weapons, officer families’ household items), soldiers’ personal effects found during search operations at the place of hostilities (icon, shoulder straps, crucifixes, coins, cartridge cases).
The official ceremony to reinter 106 Russian Imperial Army soldiers who died during WWI in Postavy in 1916 was held near the village of Makarovtsy, Postavy District. The remains of the warriors were discovered during search operations which were conducted by the 52nd separate search battalion of Belarus’ Armed Forces in May-July 2018.
The reenactment Postavy Frontiertook place near Zadevskoye Lake and the village of Duki, Postavy District, Vitebsk Oblast. About 60 participants from Minsk, Brest, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad took part in the event. The audience got acquainted with the life of Russian and German soldiers, their uniforms and weapons of the First World War and the surviving fortifications.
