Grodno, one of Belarus’ oldest towns, celebrated its 890th anniversary on 15 September. On this day the city’s central streets turned into a huge festival venue offering an array of sports events, cultural pursuits and entertainment activities. By the way, Grodno is Belarus’ only town where the unique ‘old city’ quarter has survived to this very day. On this day, new names were added to the Alley of Celebrities, hordes of contemporary philomaths gathered for Belarus’ Literary Treasures festival, gourmands were amazed with new shades of taste during the cheese festival. To crown this all, the native land received a ‘record-breaking’ declaration of love as 150 cyclists covered a 42km distance between the twin towns of Grodno and Druskininkai and champion and world record-breaker from Grodno Alexander Kodis pulled a 12-tonne hybrid trolleybus for 15 meters.
