A pumpkin weighing almost half a tonne, Belarusian watermelons, giant sunflower, giant pepper, 160 varieties of grapes, berries from Polesie region, fragrant seeds of future bread loaves… This is the colorful and tasty palette of colors of the 2018 summer.
The country's cherry capital (Glubokoye), cucumber (Shklov) and tomato (Ivie) ones held traditional festivals to celebrate the harvest. The berry festival at the residence of the Cherry Queen, cucumber and tomato fests have become gastronomic hallmarks of Belarus.
This summer Belarusians set many farming records: watermelons not inferior in taste and size to those from abroad, a pumpkin 375cm in diameter, more than 160 grape varieties.
The farmers harvested the main crop – grain – by 27 August. The biggest contributors to the harvest were Minsk Oblast (1.3 million tonnes) and Brest Oblast (926,000 tonnes). The overall harvest is 5.19 million tonnes of grain.
