Latvian MP: OSCE ODIHR recommendations are important to act upon and benefit from

MINSK, 2 August (BelTA) – Recommendations of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) are important for taking action and benefiting from it. Member of the Lithuanian parliament, member of the Security, Corruption, and Border Cooperation Commission Zenta Tretjak made the statement in an interview with the newspaper SB Belarus Segodnya, BelTA has learned.

The Latvian MP underscored that the recommendations are important for taking any further actions, for getting some benefits. In her words, Latvia also gets European Union recommendations on ways to fight corruption, for instance. “But then every country has its own laws. It is good if there are any recommendations that can hint at what direction you should be moving. But not damaging your own interests is important, too,” Zenta Tretjak is convinced. “We had a directive just right after we joined the European Union. But now the situation in the country is totally different and we don’t know how we can flesh out this recommendation legislatively because we have to change the legislation and the structure for that.”

“I believe that the core of this advice from the OSCE is that Belarus should work together with other countries. Needless to say, every country should be democratic and independent,” she added.

According to the MP, she is glad that parliamentarians from Belarus and Latvia can find common solutions. “We can give a lot to each other. Mentoring or attempting to suppress someone else’s will are out of the question,” believes Zenta Tretjak.
