Lukashenko participates in Victory Day festivities in Moscow

MOSCOW, 9 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko took part in Victory Day festivities in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

The head of state attended a parade held in Red Square in honor of the 79th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. President of Russia Vladimir Putin greeted him before the event began.

Together with other foreign leaders and veterans Aleksandr Lukashenko watched the parade from the stands.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin made a speech. He underlined the importance of protecting historical truth and of preventing the revival of fascism, the stirring of interethnic and interreligious strife. A minute of silence was observed in memory of the war dead.

After the parade the leaders of countries went together to lay a wreath and flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Gardens outside Kremlin walls.

The distinguished guests, who were present at the event, also included the leaders of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Cuba, Laos, and Guinea-Bissau.

Aleksandr Lukashenko came to Moscow on a working visit the day before. The president took part in a jubilee summit of the Eurasian Economic Union in the Kremlin on 8 May.
