Domracheva, Skardino bid farewell to biathlon at Raubichi

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Four-time Olympic champion Darya Domracheva and Olympic champion Nadezhda Skardino bid farewell to biathlon at a retirement event that followed the Legends Race biathlon festival at the Raubichi Olympic Training Center on 18 February, BelTA has learned. 

The outstanding Belarusian biathletes addressed their fans, who, according to Darya Domrcheva and Nadezhda Skardino, had spent all these years together with them. “I am grateful to our fans who stayed with us during our triumphs and defeats. Thank you for your support. I felt the fans’ love throughout many years, and did my best to meet your expectations,” said Darya Domracheva.

“I thank all the fans for the positive energy you give us. Believe me, every word for Dasha and me was very important and helped us succeed,” said Nadezhda Skardino.

The event wrapped up with a colorful laser show and fireworks.

The Legends Race was followed by the awards ceremony of the winners of the festival, which was attended by Belarusian Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk, NOC First Vice President Andrei Astashevich and Chairman of the Presidential Sport Club Dmitry Lukashenko.

Medals to the winners of the Snow Sniper national biathlon tournament for children and youth were presented by Halvard Hanevold, Vincent Defrasne, Karin Oberhofer, Florence Baverel, Pieralberto Carrara. They were helped by the mascot of the 2nd European Games, Lesik the Fox.

The leading Belarusian biathletes announced their retirement in summer 2018. Nadezhda Skardino won the women's biathlon 4x6km relay gold for Belarus at PyeongChang 2018. She also won the individual bronze at the 2014 Olympics.

Darya Domracheva won four gold medals (three in Sochi in 2014 and one in Pyeongchang in 2018). The Belarusian is two-time world champion (2012 and 2013) and the Biathlon World Cup overall winner for the 2014–15 season. She was given the Hero of Belarus title after her performance at the Sochi Olympics.  

The Legends Race was held at the Raubichi Olympic Training Center for the third time.
