Miory District to develop social infrastructure, green economy with EU grant

VITEBSK, 2 April (BelTA) –The Miory District Executive Committee won a European Commission grant to implement the project “Together for community and nature: strengthening development process in Miory District via cooperation between local authorities and civil society”, BelTA learned from the committee.

The total budget of the project will amount to almost 1.1 million, 90% of which will be provided by the European Union. Partners of the Miory District Executive Committee include the APB BirdLife Belarus public association and the Latvian Rural Forum. The project aims to design a mechanism for implementation of Miory District sustainable development strategy which will be based on cooperation between the local authorities and civil society associations. This model will focus on promoting involvement and responsibility of the local community, supporting cultural and biological diversity, developing social infrastructure, protected areas, and green economy.

The project can be divided into several major components. They include drawing up a sustainable development strategy of the district, setting up bodies for its implementation, territorial working groups and the Local Development Agency. The project will organize workshops, trainings, educational events on nature protection for volunteers, tour guides, craftsmen, local residents, farmers, representatives of agro- and eco-estates. “An important component of the initiative is a brand promotion campaign. It will include environmental holidays Cranes and Cranberries of Miory District in Miory, local celebrations in Disna and Perebrodye village,”the local authorities noted.

The project also provides for financial assistance to public associations, agro- and eco-estates, small businesses.
