CSTO PA, CIS IPA to monitor presidential election in Belarus

MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA) and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS IPA) have already confirmed they will participate in monitoring the presidential election in Belarus, BelTA learned from Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko at a session of the Council of the House of Representatives.

Igor Sergeyenko said: “The election campaign is gaining steam. Delegations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the Pan-African Parliament, the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Russia, and Uzbekistan have been invited to participate in international observation. The CSTO Parliamentary Assembly and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly have already confirmed they will monitor the election. In the future we will have to assign people responsible for interaction with the observers and work out the procedure for working with them.”

The collection of citizen signatures to nominate candidates for the presidency of the Republic of Belarus is over. “The registration of presidential candidates will take place on 22-31 December. Pre-election campaigning will begin in January,” the speaker of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament said. “And now we need to focus on work relating to the election, including meetings with the population in constituencies, in worker collectives in private and state-run organizations. We need to provide assistance to municipal authorities on all matters.”
