MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - The CIS mission is set to observe the presidential election in Belarus, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told the media on 30 October, BelTA has learned.

“I confirmed the readiness of the CIS Executive Committee, after receiving an invitation, to form a mission of representatives of the CIS in order to observe the preparations for and organization of the presidential election in Belarus in January,” Sergei Lebedev said. “We are all closely following the steps that are being taken to hold election in Belarus. Active work has already begun. I have talked to many representatives of the CIS countries. They are ready to nominate observers to our mission. We are waiting for an official invitation. We are ready for it.”

According to the CIS secretary general, there have been quite a few elections and referendums in the CIS space this year. “The presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Azerbaijan, and a referendum took place in Kazakhstan. I have just returned from the parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan. They all were well-organized. The observation mission of 167 people from eight CIS countries, including Belarus, took an active part in observing the elections. We felt hospitality, cordiality and assistance in the realization of our tasks as observers,” he added.

The CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives has convened for a meeting in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk. The permanent representatives are set to sum up the results of the meetings of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council, and outline the tasks in terms of the implementation of the documents adopted and the agreements reached. The meeting is set to discuss the implementation of the roadmap to implement initiatives on cooperation in the political, humanitarian and social sectors, expressed by the heads of delegations during the CIS Heads of State Council, the CIS Heads of Government Council, the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Economic Council meetings. The CIS plenipotentiaries are also set to consider the progress made in the fulfillment of the action plan for 2023-2025 to implement the memorandum on deepening interaction between the CIS Executive Committee and the Eurasian Economic Commission.
