MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – After the meeting with the head of state to discuss the 2025 election, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko told journalists about plans to invite international observers, BelTA has learned.
The CEC head explained that the law determines the entities that can invite international observers. These are the president, the Belarusian People's Congress, both chambers of parliament, the government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CEC.
The Central Election Commission of Belarus has already sent letters to the CEC chairs of the CIS member states inviting them to put together election observation missions for the 2025 presidential election in Belarus. These are the election commissions with which the CEC of Belarus actively collaborates within the framework of the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies that Belarus currently chairs.
According to Igor Karpenko, there are plans to invite missions from the CIS, SCO and other international organizations. “We will consider the possibility of inviting observers from a number of other international organizations, such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Organization of Turkic States, the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, and the Pan-African Parliament,” he said.
The CEC chief remarked that the possibility to invite other international entities was also discussed at the meeting; and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CEC were tasked to deal with this matter. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CEC have been instructed to work out these issues. If any international structures notify us about their intention to monitor the election, we will carefully consider all applications and make decisions on them,” Igor Karpenko informed. At the same time, “all possible factors and international obligations” of Belarus will be taken into account.
