MINSK, 12 October (BelTA) – The presidential election in Belarus was conducted in an open, free and democratic manner, in line with the Constitution and the Electoral Code of the country, head of the election observation mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), SCO Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev told media in Minsk on 12 October, BelTA has learned.
“The mission announces that the election of the President of Belarus has been held in an open, free and democratic manner, in line with the Constitution and the Electoral Code of the country as well as with the international obligations. The mission did not register any violations of norms and requirements of the national election legislation,” said Dmitry Mezentsev.
According to the monitoring group, the presidential candidates were provided with equal rights and opportunities to run. The mission also paid attention to a high turnout and well-organized work of precinct election commissions.
The SCO mission expressed gratitude to the Central Election Commission of Belarus for provided assistance and every condition for the work of observers in the country.
The mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization included representatives of SCO member states (Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan) as well as representatives of the SCO Secretariat.
According to Dmitry Mezentsev, it is for the first time in the history of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that its observation mission has worked in a state with an observer status in the SCO.
