MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – At the conclusion of his visit to Belarus special coordinator of the OSCE mission, Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Kent Harstedt thanked the Belarusian government for tight cooperation with the OSCE observers, BelTA learned from representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
“I thank the Belarusian authorities for their timely invitation and their close cooperation with OSCE observers. This election represents a pivotal moment for Belarus,” said Kent Harstedt.
The OSCE mission coordinator met with Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina, and members of Belarus’ delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Minsk on 21-22 September. Kent Harstedt also met with members of the OSCE ODIHR long-term mission and leaders of the Belarusian opposition. Apart from that, he visited Gomel where he met with the city’s mayor Piotr Kirichenko, members of the local election commission, and representatives of the civil society.
Kent Harstedt also spoke in favor of providing all citizens with equal opportunities to participate in all stages of the election.
The source specified that Kent Harstedt will coordinate the work of about 450 short-term observers, including about 50 MPs from 22 countries. The observers will work all over Belarus on the election day.
