Equal treatment of presidential candidates in Belarus during voter signature verification

MINSK, 22 September (BelTA) – The CIS observers believe that all the candidates for the Belarus presidency were treated equally when signatures collected to support their nomination as presidential candidates had to be verified. The statement is part of the interim report released by the CIS election observation mission on 22 September, BelTA has learned.

The report was published on the website of the CIS Executive Committee. According to the source, the CIS observers took part in a number of sessions of territorial commissions during the voter signature verification process. The CIS observers state that all the candidates were treated equally and in compliance with election laws.

The report also reads that signatures were collected without hindrances. The Central Election Commission prepared an information and explanatory video concerning the signature collection process. The video was broadcast by television.

As a result of the voter signature verification process registration has been denied to two potential candidates: Zhanna Romanovskaya and Viktor Tereshchenko. The former submitted fewer than 800 signatures while the number of signatures submitted by the latter turned out to contain only 6,699 authentic signatures.

The CIS interim report reads that Viktor Tereshchenko’s petition concerning the denial of registration had not been satisfied. The CIS observers attended the Supreme Court’s session that dealt with the petition.

The CIS monitoring mission also noted that presidential candidates had been nominated and registered and complaints and petitions had been dealt with in accordance with the Electoral Code.
