MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) – The figure of Francysk Skaryna has become one of Belarus’ symbols, Alexander Susha, Deputy Director of Belarus’ National Library for Academic Research and Publishing, science editor of the Francysk Skaryna encyclopedia, told a press conference at BelTA’s press center on 19 December, BelTA informs.
According to Alexander Susha, large-scale celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Belarusian book printing increased Francysk Skaryna’s popular appeal overseas. The books which have come out in recent years play an important role in promoting the information about the Belarusian book printer. Alexander Susha mentioned the Francysk Skaryna encyclopedia among these projects. In his words, it sums up all the work that has been done before.
The book was published by the Petrus Brovka Belorusskaya Encyclopedia publishing house. Co-authored by nearly 150 people, the encyclopedia has over 1,000 articles and around 500 photos. It features some entries from a thirty-year-old reference book on Skaryna but has been mostly written from scratch.
This popular science book about the figure of Francysk Skaryna, his work and legacy expands the cultural and information space of the modern society by adding a national component, added Alexander Lukashanets, First Deputy Director of the Center for Belarusian Culture Studies, an academician and member of the editorial board of the Francysk Skaryna encyclopedia.
The publication is dedicated to Francysk Skaryna’s life and artistic journey. It analyzes all of his books, their content, the circumstances under which they were written, and their design. The encyclopedia helps learn more about the countries and cities linked with the Belarusian enlightener, the life of people who were linked with him or influenced his book printing activity, and his followers. The book displays Francysk Skaryna’s image in the Belarusian cinematography and theater art, painting, and literature.
