Plans to unfurl Belarusian flag on Mont Blanc as part of European Games Flame of Peace relay

GOMEL, 28 February (BelTA) – The Belarusian flag will be hoisted on Mont Blanc during the Flame of Peace torch relay ahead of the 2nd European Games, Aleksei Bogdanovich, Manager for Communication, PR and Mass Media of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC), said at a meeting in the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee on 28 February, BelTA has learned.

The Flame of Peace relay is a unique event that will show Belarus to the world,” Aleksei Bogdanovich said. The flame of the 2nd European Games will be lit in Rome on 3 May. Then the flame will be taken to Mont Blanc where the Belarusian flag will be raised as well. According to Aleksei Bogdanovich, journalists, big TV channels and sport officials of Italy have already expressed interest in the event.

The torch relay will span a number of European countries: Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. Torchbearers will be accompanied by media representatives, sport and tourism specialists and bikers.

The flame will arrive in Belarus on 11 May. The relay route will go though all regions of the country, its landmark places. Every region is preparing special programs to show off local traditions and flavor. The flame will be carried by more than 450 people: well-known athletes, public figures, representatives of culture and art.

The final destination of the Flame of Peace torch relay will be Dinamo Stadium in Minsk. The flame will be brought to the stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games on 21 June.

The 2nd European Games will take place in Minsk on 21-30 June 2019. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 199 medal events in 15 sports. Competitions in eight sports will be qualifiers for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
