Mayor: Minsk will be ready to host European Games

MINSK, 1 September (BelTA) - Minsk is in a high degree of preparedness for the Second European Games, Minsk Mayor Andrei Shorets told the media after the ceremony to sign a contract on holding the Second European Games in Minsk in 2019 BelTA has learned.

“Obviously, we are opening a new page in the history of the Belarusian sport. Minsk has developed the sports infrastructure that can host competitions of the highest level. Among the major facilities to be completed by 2019 is Minsk Dinamo Stadium which will be commissioned by mid-2018. The rhythmic gymnastics center will be unveiled by 8 March. The subcommittees of the European Games actively work hard on every area of infrastructure development. We now have a clear idea of the meals zones for athletes, hospitality zones for guests and fans, transport communication, security and safety of guests and participants. We are working on these issues. I am sure that Minsk will be a good host of the European Games 2019,” Andrei Shorets said.

The Minsk mayor noted that the Belarusian capital will take advantage of the experience of other countries who have hosted large sport events. “We traveled to Baku, the host of the first European Games in 2015. We went to see the IAAF World Championships in London. We are studying all the nuances to make sure Minsk is up to international standards,” he said.

The competition program will include 15 sports; badminton, 3x3 basketball, boxing, wrestling (freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s), track and road cycling, gymnastics (artistic, rhythmic), acrobatics, aerobics, trampoline tumbling, canoeing and kayaking, judo, karate, athletics, sambo, archery, shooting sports, table tennis, and beach soccer. 189 medals events will be held in 23 sport disciplines.

The competitions of the Second European Games will be held at Minsk Arena, Dinamo Stadium, Chizhovka Arena, the rowing canal in Zaslavl and other facilities.
