Gomel Oblast athletes to compete in 9 sports at 2nd European Games
GOMEL, 3 June (BelTA) – Representatives of Gomel Oblast will compete for medals in nine sports at the 2nd European Games, head of the sports and tourism department of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee Denis Yezersky told the media on 3 June, BelTA has learned.
A total of 35 athletes of the region are gearing up for the forthcoming multisport event. “Athletes of Gomel Oblast will compete in such sports as canoe sprint, boxing, cycling, wrestling, judo, athletics, basketball and acrobatics,” the head of the department said. According to his words, the final number of athletes is still unknown as test and qualifying competitions are still underway.
According to Denis Yezersky, over 6,000 residents of the region will attend the competitions in Minsk. “The opening and closing ceremonies, beach soccer and athletics are most popular among the Gomel residents. Ticket sales are underway. Tickets are available at the official selling points, travel organizations in Gomel, Svetlogorsk, Mozyr, Rechitsa and other settlements,” he said.

The fan zone in Gomel will open near the Ice Palace on 21 June. Live broadcasting will be available there from the main venues of the competitions. A rich cultural and entertainment program at the fan zone will feature sales outlets, children’s, themed and photo zones.
A lot of interesting events have been prepared for the Flame of Peace torch relay which is expected to arrive in Gomel Oblast on 5 June. The main symbol of the competitions will be carried around the landmarks of the region. The relay will travel through Gomel, Zhlobin, Pripyatsky National Park, Turov, Mozyr. The flame of the 2nd European Games will then head for Minsk Oblast.
The Flame of the 2nd European Games was lit in Rome on 3 May. Then, Belarusian climbers took the torch to the summit of Mont Blanc. In Europe, the Flame of Peace travelled through Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.
The flame is currently traveling through Mogilev Oblast of Belarus. The Flame of Peace has already traveled through Brest Oblast, Grodno Oblast, Vitebsk Oblast.
The torch relay will complete at the opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games at the Dinamo Stadium on 21 June.
The 2nd European Games will take place in Minsk on 21-30 June. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 200 medal events in 15 sports.
