MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) – Free Wi-Fi Internet access will be available in the Student Village during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019, BelTA learned from the press service of the Directorate of the 2nd European Games 2019.
The agency in charge of organizing the games and the Belarusian Internet service provider Delovaya Set signed an agreement on 13 June. The ISP will enable free access to the Internet using Wi-Fi technology at speeds of up to 100Mbps in the residential complex Student Village in Dzerzhinskogo Avenue where athletes will stay during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019.
The Internet access speed will allow the athletes to use messengers, send and receive photos and videos, and watch HD broadcasts of the competitions. Measures will be taken to keep Wi-Fi access working even in an emergency. “Offering comfortable conditions of stay to participants of the games is a top priority for us,” stressed Georgy Katulin, Director of the Directorate of the 2nd European Games 2019. “Wi-Fi-enabled Internet access is a serious instrument of communications and a source of information, which all the delegations will need. For instance, delegations from countries like Russia, the UK, France, and Germany will include hundreds of people. It is impossible to manage them without modern technologies.”
Georgy Katulin reminded that a special mobile app will be developed to allow tracking the competitions in real time in addition to looking up their schedule and many other things. The official said he hopes that the project would make a decent contribution to the successful organization of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019.
The telecommunication infrastructure will be deployed in the Student Village before the games begin and will remain there after the games are over. Students of Minsk universities will use the network. It will make their stay more comfortable and will have a positive effect on the education process.
Apart from that, the ISP Delovaya Set intends to extend the Free Wi-Fi Minsk network onto the public transport vehicles, which will be used to transport people between sport sites, cultural facilities, and other places during the forum.
The Free Wi-Fi Minsk network went online on 19 April 2018. It includes over 100 public access points deployed by the ISP Delovaya Set in the Belarusian capital city. The network offers free access to the World Wide Web for an unlimited period of time.
BelTA reported earlier that the European Olympic Committees demand a lot from the infrastructure and the quality of communication during sport events. Belarus is putting serious efforts into the organization of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. Information and communication technology specialists have already studied the experience of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Russia’s experience of organizing the world football championship will be examined as well. “These are very serious preparation tasks. Apart from ensuring the ability to communicate we have to take care of security and cyber security,” said Belarusian Communications and Informatization Minister Sergei Popkov.
Minsk will host the Second European Games on 21-30 June 2019. The games will feature 15 sports. As many as 206 medal events will be held in 23 sport disciplines.
