Edeshko to repeat his legendary Munich 1972 full-court shot at Flame of Peace ceremony in Grodno

GRODNO, 17 May (BelTA) - Basketball player Ivan Edeshko will repeat the legendary full-court shot that brought the Team USSR the gold medal at the Munich Olympics 1972 to give a ceremonial start ti the Flame of Peace torch relay of the 2nd European Games in Grodno Oblast on 18 May, BelTA learned from the Grodno city administration.

The torch arrives in the region on 18 May. The main venue for the celebrations will be Lenina Square.

Spectators are in for a interesting and rich concert program featuring Grodno singers and guest stars. Many surprises are in store. The most famous native of Grodno, basketball player Ivan Edeshko will repeat his legendary pass across the court to Aleksandr Belov which he performed at the Olympics in Munich in 1972. One of the young players from Grodno will step into the role of Aleksandr Belov. The video of that famous game will be simultaneously broadcast on the big screen,” the Grodno city authorities said. Ivan Edeshko will be one of the torchbearers.

The flame of the 2nd European Games will be carried through the streets of Grodno by the people who are well-known both in Grodno and outside Belarus. These are Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Elena Volchetskaya, world champion in hammer throw Ivan Tsikhan, shooters Vitali Bubnovich and Ihar Basinski and also model Ekaterina Domankova and Rector of the Belarusian State University Andrei Korol.

The Flame of Peace will then travel to the Augustow Canal and the agro-town of Vertelishki, Grodno District on 19 May. The relay will also travel through the Volkovysk, Novogrudok, Lida, Korelichi, Smorgon and Ostrovets districts. The flame will be taken to the most important landmarks of the region.

The Flame of the 2nd European Games will travel across Grodno Oblast through 23 May before setting off to Vitebsk Oblast.

The 2nd European Games will be held in Minsk on 21-30 June. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 200 medal events in 15 sports.
