MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ Communications and Informatization Ministry and Latvia’s Transport Ministry have agreed to sign a protocol of intent to cooperate in order to vacate the 694-790 MHz radio-frequency band, BelTA has learned.
The document was signed by Belarus’ Communications and Informatization Minister Konstantin Shulgan and Deputy State Secretary of Latvia’s Transport Ministry Uldis Reimanis during the 26th international forum on information and communications technologies TIBO 2019. “We have been working on this for a long time. Our main aim is to sort out the radio-frequency band to ensure well-balanced and mutually profitable introduction of new technologies together with Latvia. This is only the beginning, the first step when we simply express our readiness to continue working in this area,” Konstantin Shulgan said.
Vacation of the 694-790 MHz frequency band will help ensure that communication equipment in the border areas works without radio interference. It will be done stage by stage. Plans are in place to hold a high-level meeting to sign the protocol of intent in Latvia in May 2019. The next step will include drafting an agreement on technical criteria for the optimal and efficient use of this radio-frequency band by next-generation mobile communication systems in the border areas. According to the plan, the work to vacate this radio-frequency band should be completed by 30 June 2022.
The forum TIBO 2019 is running in Minsk Arena on 8-12 April. It includes major events on the ICT which bring together heads of international and regional organizations, foreign ministries, agencies, and telecom providers. They include the Eurasian Digital Forum, the Belarusian ICT Summit, the CIS and CEE Spectrum Management Conference, and the International Telecommunication Union workshop on radio monitoring. Another event will be the announcement of the results of the TIBO Internet Award contest among Internet resources.
