MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) - The thematic event UCM and Their Negative Impact on Socio-Economic Development took place in the Vienna International Center in Austria on 27 November, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Austria.

The forum was initiated and organized in partnership with other like-minded states by the permanent missions of Belarus, China, Iran and Russia to international organizations in Vienna.

The thematic forum was held on the sidelines of the 20th session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), held in Vienna from 27 November to 1 December. The event was attended by heads and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited to the UN Office in Vienna, heads and participants of national delegations to the UNIDO General Conference, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations.

Speaking at the event were William Castillo, Vice Minister of People's Power for Finance and Foreign Trade of Venezuela, Kazem Abadi, Vice-President of the Judiciary for International Affairs and Secretary General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights.

The presentation of the UN special rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the realization of human rights, Professor of the Private International Law and European Law Department and the Public Administration Department of the Belarusian State University Alena Dovgan attracted special attention of the forum participants.

The participants in the thematic event at the Vienna International Center reviewed the use of unilateral coercive measures by Western states and categorically rejected them as an illegal extraterritorial means of economic and political pressure on unwanted countries. The speakers noted that sanctions contradict the economic interests of most countries, impede the wellbeing of target population groups, create obstacles to the full realization of their right to development, have the potential to intensify structural problems in the world economy and undermine global food and energy security.

The forum participants discussed possible forms and areas for joint further work to counter unilateral coercive measures and eliminate them from the practice of international cooperation.
