Belarus, China to sign agreement on mutual recognition of education certificates

MINSK, 13 March (BelTA) – Belarus and China are gearing up to sign an intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of education certificates, Belarus' Education Minister Igor Karpenko said as he attended the meeting with Chinese students in Belarus who have excelled in education, research and public activity, BelTA has learned.

The minister believes that the agreement will help build up contacts in education between Belarus and China. The year 2019 has been declared the Year of Education of Belarus in China. “Within the framework of the Year of Education, we intend to launch youth and students exchange programs, hold presentations of the countries’ education potential, forums, festivals, conferences, workshops about culture and history of Belarus and China, set up summer schools for university and school students, organize other events in order to present information about the education systems of the two countries and step up cooperation,” he noted.

The project “Education Map of Belarus” is currently in progress. It is a program of educational tourism which includes excursions for Chinese citizens, consulting companies and media to Belarusian educational institutions.

Igor Karpenko pointed out that almost a thousand of Belarusian citizens are studying in China thanks to various education programs and over 200 grants provided by China. Every year the number of Belarusians students in China increases by 100 people. Belarusian and Chinese universities develop programs of student exchange while teaching staff share experience, take part in internships and research projects.

The Belarusian Education Ministry developed a strategy for teaching and studying the Chinese language in Belarus for 2017-2020. It embraces a broad range of measures to train specialists who will be able to work with the Chinese language.

Chinese is part of the curriculum in 25 secondary schools, with seven more schools offering it as an optional course. Belarus has provided schools and gymnasiums with textbooks and digital applications for them, composed materials for the compulsory final school exam and the centralized testing in this subject. Igor Karpenko also noted that 14 universities offer the Chinese language courses.

The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Cui Qiming. Igor Karpenko presented certificates of gratitude for active participation in social life and successful studies to the best Chinese students.

The event also included a cultural program and exhibitions advertising Belarusian universities.
