MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) – Belarusian boxer Dmitry Asanov qualified for the next year’s Olympic Games in Rio, beating India’s Shiva Thapa in the bantamweight event at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar, BelTA informs.
The Belarusian earlier settled for bronze after losing to Michael Conlan of Ireland in the semifinal. In order to earn the Olympic quota place it was necessary for Dmitry Asanov to win a bout against the Indian boxer who lost in the other semifinal.
Dmitry Asanov won the bout 3-0 (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
The 56kg gold was claimed by Michael Conlan of Ireland who was too strong for Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev in the final.
Dmitry Asanov’s Olympic berth and bronze were the only success for Belarus at the World Championships in Doha.
