Belarus Events Calendar: January 2014

New Year and Christmas in Belarus

 The winter holidays in Belarus last for a few weeks and include Catholic Christmas (25 December), New Year (31 December – 1 January), Orthodox Christmas (7 January), Julian calendar New Year (13-14 January). During the holidays traditional festivities take place next to Christmas trees along with concerts, fireworks, sport events and performances for kids.

Slutsk Belts exhibition

Slutsk belts are a Belarusian relic famous all over the world. These belts were created in the 18th-19th centuries at manufactories, the most famous of which was the one located in Slutsk and belonging to the Radziwill family. The belts were made to an intricate technology using silk, gold and silver threads. Back then they were part of a men’s costume being the evidence of power and wealth of their owner. Four belts will be exhibited, all dating to the late 18th to early 19th century and loaned by the Lviv History Museum. Other exhibits worth seeing are portraits of the Belarusian gentry dated by the 18th-19th centuries.

Australian circus show "Magic Ice" in Minsk

For several months the Belarusian State Circus will host the Australian grand show "Magic Ice". The audience will see the international team of professionals: repeated world figure skating champions from New Zealand, Australia and Canada. The program also includes the most spectacular circus performances: Domina Magic (Italy), a Chinese circus show, contortion (Canada), taming parrots (Russia), and an aerial acrobatics show (Belarus).

Porcelain en pointes. Lladrò art in the world’s best theaters

As part of its global tour, the famous Spanish company Lladrò will present a unique porcelain collection dedicated to Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The exposition features 20 handmade figurines, the pride of the Lladrò Museum of Valencia. The elegant ballerina figurines were created by the leading artists, sculptors and designers of our times, including Jaime Hayon and Bodo Sperlain… The gem of the collection is the Essence of the Dance statuette designed especially for the project by Jose Javier Malavia.

Belaya Rus and its Neighbors exhibition

The unique exhibition is a joint project of the National History Museum of Belarus and the Russian Ethnography Museum of St. Petersburg, one of the largest museums in Europe. The exposition features over 700 artifacts of the traditional culture of the nations living on the territory that for many centuries has been called Belaya Rus. The visitors to the exhibition will get acquainted with national costumes, household items, music instruments, and the religious and craft traditions of the Slavic nations…

Exhibition of national treasures in Minsk

The National History Museum of Belarus invites those who are interested in history and numismatics to attend the exhibition “Bank BelVEB: New life of national treasures” dedicated to the Belarusian heritage. The exposition features rare exhibits from 26 collections of the museum, including the unique coin of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania - penyaz dating back to the late 14th - early 15th centuries, the porcelain from the famous Order service, rare documents of the 16th century, and Russian icons of the 19th century… The violin made by Giovanni Paolo Maggini in 1596 is the central piece of the music collection.

BelTA exhibition “The history of Belarus in the photographs of our photojournalists”

The photo exhibition opened a series of events dedicated to the celebrations of the 95th anniversary of the Belarusian Telegraph Agency BelTA. The exposition includes 42 photographs chosen out of one million photos deposited in the archives of the agency. Thanks to these unique photographs the visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to see such historical events as the signing of the Commonwealth of Independent States Treaty, the construction of the first big department store GUM and Minsk’s main street…

Spirit of Times and Luxury: Fashion and Style of 1820-1920

Unique items from the private collection of designer Igor Surmachevsky are on display at the splendid halls of Mir Castle. The exhibition features clothes, shoes, and accessories that were an integral part of the image of a woman in 1820-1920. For example, evening gowns, ball dresses, and even wedding gowns reflecting the European fashion trends that prevailed a century ago are currently on display at the Ivory Hall of Mir Castle…

Magnificat 2013 festival

The international festival of Christian movies and TV programs will traditionally gather producers and cinematography amateurs. This year the forum will feature 17 movies from 10 countries. One of them is the film Ptirichka by Irina Vasilyeva (Russia) which has already been presented to the Belarusian audience. The film is about Lina Mkrtchan, the first Russian opera singer who gave up her opera career to sing in a church choir…

January Music Nights festival in Brest

The festival will be abundant in unforgettable meetings with leading performers and musicians from Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Poland, the UK, the U.S., Chile, Lithuania and Kazakhstan. Outstanding singers and prize-holders of international competitions such as Vladislav Pyavko, Irina Bogacheva and Solomiya Priymak will be accompanied by the symphony orchestra under the direction of Alexander Anisimov. New Year Strauss Gala

The program of the soiree dedicated to Johann Strauss, the Waltz King, will include his world famous waltzes along with polkas and pieces from his most famous operettas The Bat. Housemaids by Roman Viktyuk’s theater

An outstanding director of modern times, who is among 50 most influential people of the second half of the 20th century, Roman Viktyuk is famous for his extravagant plays. Housemaids based on the play of the same name by French dramatist Jean Genet is not an exception. The play, which came as a breakthrough in the history of the Russian theater in the 1980s thanks to its innovative aesthetics, celebrates its 25th anniversary.
