MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarusian Sambo fighter Stepan Popov won gold defeating Amil Gasimov of Azerbaijan in the 74kg category event at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, BelTA informs.
Stepan Popov defeated his opponent with a leg hold when his clear victory was announced. It is noteworthy that the reigning world champion (Gasimov) and current European champion (Popov) faced each other in the final bout at the European Games in Baku. Once the battle was over it turned out that the Azerbaijani athlete was injured and could not get up. The Belarusian sambo fighter showed his human side by carrying his opponent off the mat.
Bronze in the 74kg category was clinched by Russia’s Azamat Sidakov and Georgia’s Kakha Mamulashvili.
Earlier, Vladislav Burdz (57kg) and Yekaterina Prokopenko (60kg) won bronze medals at the Games in Baku.
