MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won nine medals at the 2010 Paralympics that took place in Vancouver on 12-21 March.
Liudmila Vauchok brought Belarus the ninth medal on 21 March, after coming third in Women’s 1km Sitting race. The gold went to Italy’s Francesca Porcelatto, Olena Iurkovska of Ukraine’s won silver.
Belarus became ninth in the overall medal standings with the total of nine medals (2 golds and 7 bronzes). In 2006 Belarus also scored nine medals at Torino Paralympics (one gold, 6 silvers, and two bronzes).
Belarus’ captain Liudmila Vauchok took two golds and two bronzes in cross-country skiing races. Vasili Shaptsiaboi also took two bronzes in cross country skiing and biathlon, Yadviha Skorabahataya, Dzmitry Loban, and Larysa Varona also won a bronze each.
Before the Paralympics, Belarusian team expected to win five medals, but the athletes managed to exceed the expectations.
All in all, 21 nations have won medals at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympics.
