Lukashenko: Belarus will not cede its sovereignty

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – No one in Belarus is going to give up the country’s independence and sovereignty, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed members of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the sixth and seventh convocations on 5 December, BelTA has learned.

“We have never wanted and are not going to become part of any other country, even brotherly Russia,” the president said.

“Remember one thing: I am not a newcomer who has been in office for 3-4-5 years. I do not want all the things we have achieved with you to go down the drain. We have built a sovereign and independent state and we do not want to put it to bed with a shovel, or throw it away or pass to someone. This will never happen as long as I am here. This is our country. We are sovereign and independent. We should be proud of it,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

He added that if no one claims our country, if no one seeks to conquer it, then why give away these assets – sovereignty and independence – willfully. “We have had enough of yoke, poverty and misery,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

At the same time, the president noted that it is important to remain sensible: “We should not provide even a slightest reason for anyone to want to put us on our knees. This is the wisdom of politicians and the policy we are pursuing.”
