For many amateur runners the Minsk Half Marathon is the most important event in Belarus’ annual sport calendar. The wish to run along the streets of Minsk, which celebrates its 950th birthday this year, was voiced by representatives of 50 states. The races attracted participants from the neighboring countries, and also from Kenya, New Zealand, Japan, Portugal, Morocco... Thousands of Belarusians, including people of different professions and posts, members of public organizations and clubs, famous athletes, show business and TV celebrities, took to the streets for the sport forum 2017…
The 5.5km and 10km events got underway at 10am near the Palace of Sports, with the 13.11 mile half marathon kicking off at 12.30.
Minsk Mayor Andrei Shorets named the Minsk Half Marathon 2017 a true decoration of Minsk’s 950th anniversary celebrations on 9-10 September.
Numerous spectators lined the pavements to cheer on the runners. “There were a lot of people in costumes supporting us along the route. It was really nice. Although you do you best to focus on running and your breathing rhythm, it is hard to remain indifferent when you see such sincere emotions,” spokesperson for the Belarusian head of state Natalia Eismont shared her impressions of the marathon. She took part in the 5.5km route,
2005 world champion Marina Arzamasova ran the 5.5km route as well: “There are so many people on the starting line. This is great!"
The Minsk Half Marathon was won by representatives of Kenya and Belarus. Kenya’s Kiptum Maiyo finished first in the men’s race. It was his second successful attempt as he won the marathon in 2016. Lyudmila Lyakhovich of Belarus took top spot in the women’s race, completing the course in 1:13.53.
The start times for the 5.5km, 10km and 21.1km marathons were changed due to the record numbers of participants. The 5.5km route had a slightly different course this year as well.
