Minsk Half Marathon is a popular sport event which has been held as part of the City Day celebrations since 2013. The event, which covers central avenues, streets and most recognized landmarks of the Belarusian capital, is setting new records. This September the marathon drew more than 20,000: athletes and sport amateurs, representatives of ministries and agencies, MPs, businessmen, TV hosts, artists... The sports event gathered athletes from 42 countries including Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic states, Costa Rica, Kenya, and Japan.
The record-breaking participant numbers made Minsk Half Marathon 2016 the biggest running event in the history of Belarus. In spring 2016, the competition got certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Now its results and records are recognized worldwide.
Famous Belarusian runner Olga Mazurenok won the 21.1km women’s race of Minsk Half Marathon this year. She was also victorious last year. After Rio 2016 Olga Mazurenok said that she was tired, but she pulled herself together and set a new record of the Minsk track – 1 hour 11 minutes 44 seconds. Hillary Kiptum Maiyo Kimaiyo of Kenya won the men’s race.
