2017 has been declared the Year of Science in Belarus. The year is expected to be eventful and full of large-scale projects. Research and development centers and universities in all regions of Belarus will host exhibitions, presentations, conferences, and doors open days. But most importantly, Belarusian researchers will implement promising innovations. One of the most awaited projects is the launch of a Belarusian electric car with a high-capacity energy storage, first urban electric buses, multifunctional multicopters… The BelBiograd National Science and Technology Park will be unveiled in 2017. By the way, the slogan on 2017 is Year of Science for Economy!
It is symbolic that the calendar of major events of the year opened with the Belarusian Science Day marked on the last Sunday of January. Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) received greetings from colleagues from different countries, including from Zhores Alferov, Belarus-born Nobel Prize in Physics winner. Belarusian polar explorers who are currently working in Antarctica have raised the national flag and the NASB flag over the first Belarusian Antarctic station.
In his message of greetings, Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that the country values and appreciates “scientists’ contribution to the development of the national industry, improvement of the social area, and promotion of the intellectual and cultural potential of the nation.” The head of state noted that “conditions have been created for the implementation of creative initiatives. Considerable attention is paid to the development of scientific schools and the effort to draw the youth in science.”
A large-scale exhibition of the latest achievements of Belarusian scientists opened at the country’s main research center in the run-up to the Science Day. The exhibition showcased some 500 innovative solutions by scientists from 78 research agencies and institutions, the Academy of Sciences, State Military Industrial Committee, Defense Ministry, Industry Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, Healthcare Ministry, Education Ministry, innovative enterprises and technology parks among them.
The awards ceremony of the country’s best scientists and competition winners that made the list of top ten achievements of the National Academy of Sciences in 2016 in fundamental research was held as part of the event on 27 January.
