MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) – Vera Lapko of Belarus, ranked 533rd in the world, claimed her maiden Australian Open Junior title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over defending champion Slovak's world No. 563 Tereza Mihalikova on 30 January, BelTA has learned.
On her way to the title, the 17-year-old Belarusian beat Michaela Haet of Australia 6-1, 6-4, Jia Ren of China 6-1, 6-4, Japan's Chihiro Muramatsu (World No.890) 6-2, 6-3, Russia's Anna Kalinskaya (World No.597) 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, and Sara Tomic of Australia (World No.452) 6-2, 6-3.
Now Vera Lapko is expected to join the Belarusian national team ahead of an away match of the first round of the 2016 Federation Cup World Group II against Canada. Apart from her, the team will comprise Victoria Azarenka, Olga Govortsova and Alexandra Sasnovich. The matches will take place in Quebec, Canada on 6-7 February.
MINSK, 1 February (BelTA) – President of Belarus and President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated member of the Belarusian national tennis team Vera Lapko on her first Australian Open Junior title, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.
“A new bright star has been lit on the tennis horizon today, and this has been the biggest junior success of the Belarusian tennis school for the past 11 years,” the message of greetings reads.
Alexander Lukashenko expressed confidence that thanks to her talent, diligence and perseverance Vera Lapko will have many stunning victories in women’s tennis in the future.
The President wished Vera Lapko and the entire women’s team health, happiness and success in the Fed Cup round in Quebec.
