RIO DE JANEIRO, 20 August (BelTA) – Ivan Tikhon of Belarus clinched silver in the Olympic men’s hammer throwing competition in Rio with an impressive 77.79 throw, BelTA has learned.
Tajikistan's Dilshod Nazarov won gold with his 78.68m throw. Bronze went to Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki (77.73m).
Sergei Kolomoyets of Belarus finished 9th in the final with a 74.22m throw.
MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated member of the Belarusian athletics team Ivan Tikhon on winning a silver medal in the Olympic men’s hammer throw competition in Rio, BelTA learned from the presidential press service.
“This is a true feat!” the President stressed. “The strongest athletes in the world were among your rivals. You have clinched this medal surmounting colossal moral and psychological pressure. In spite of doubts and criticism, during the throwing competition you have shown what a true patriot of the Homeland can do.”
“Your hard-won victory is a wonderful example for thousands of girls and boys making the first steps in life and sport,” the head of state noted.
