MINSK, 23 October (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko took part in a ceremony to plant Tree of Peace and Sustainable Development to mark the end of World War Two and the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Organization. The ceremony took place in the Loshitsa Park in Minsk on 23 October, BelTA has learned.
Attending the ceremony were also Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha, representatives of the diplomatic corps.
A weeping cherry has been planted in the Loshitsa Park. The same tree was planted at the UN Headquarters in New York in May 2015. The Tree of Peace and Unity ceremony marked the 70th anniversary of the victory over the Nazis. The white flowers of the weeping cherry symbolize purity and rebirth, benevolence and a call for reconciliation.
Alexander Lukashenko was taken on a brief tour around the museum of the Loshitsa Manor. The Belarusian leader talked to heads of the diplomatic missions of the donor countries, representatives of international organizations who attended the ceremony.
