MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) – Belarus and USA plan to exchange ambassadors this year. The United States is looking for a site to build an embassy, TASS cited U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs George Kent as saying.
George Kent expressed sincere delight for the opportunity to exchange ambassadors with Belarus in 2020, adding that the United States is looking for a new site to build an embassy. George Kent added that the United States sees a big potential for advancing bilateral relations and is looking forward to expanding cooperation.
On 20 April, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his intention to nominate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Europe and the European Union Julie Fisher to the post of the U.S. Ambassador to Belarus. Her candidacy needs to be approved by the United States Congress. If approved, Julie Fisher will become the first U.S. Ambassador to Belarus since 2008. Previously, Julie Fisher was Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Mission to NATO, Charge d'Affaires a.i. of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, and worked in the U.S. embassies in Georgia and Ukraine.
