MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – Friendship groups of the parliaments of Belarus and Mexico have held an online meeting, BelTA has learned.

Taking part in the meeting were Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic Valery Belsky, as well as members of the House of Representatives. The MPs discussed ways to step up diplomatic and inter-parliamentary contacts and expand trade and economic cooperation.

“We explored possibilities of strengthening diplomatic presence in our countries. In particular, we considered a possibility of opening a Mexican embassy or a trade office in Belarus and, accordingly, a Belarusian trade office in Mexico. This initiative was upheld by our Mexican friends. The official study of this issue by the Mexican Parliament has already begun. In addition, we discussed trade and economic issues. Mexico needs our potash fertilizers. We know that it is the tenth-biggest agricultural producer in the world. Therefore, there are areas of mutual interest, which can pave the way for a powerful, strong friendship between our states,” said Sergei Klishevich, a member of the House of Representatives.

According to him, Belarus can use the market of the United Mexican States as a platform to promote its trade and economic interests in entire Latin America. “We could piggyback off of Mexico’s merchant fleet and other economic instruments to expand trade and economic cooperation with our long-standing partners like Venezuela and Cuba that also have good relations with Mexico,” the deputy said.

“In addition to that, we once again invited our friends to visit Belarus. They accepted the invitation. Now this visit is being worked out by the leadership of the Congress of the Union of the United Mexican States,” the parliamentarian added.

In December 2022, a Belarus-Mexico parliamentary friendship group was established at the Congress of the Union of the United Mexican States. Member of the House of Representatives Sergei Klishevich took part in the founding meeting of the group.
