MINSK, 7 August (BelTA) - Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Valery Mitskevich took part in the opening ceremony of the 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) on the theme “Responsive Parliaments for a Stable and Prosperous ASEAN”, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
In his speech at the plenary session, Valery Mitskevich congratulated all participants of the Assembly on the anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which for more than 55 years has served as an open platform for constructive dialogue and which has made a huge contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The vice speaker said that the international policy of the ASEAN countries is in many respects consonant with the peace-loving foreign policy of Belarus that is committed to building a multipolar world order based on international law and the United Nations Charter. "Our country is an open, reliable, stable and predictable partner, advocating an equal and mutually respectful dialogue in order to prevent confrontation, resolve disputes and differences peacefully," he said.
The Belarusian MPs expressed readiness for an open exchange of views, coordination of efforts and maximum use of ASEAN's integration opportunities. He stressed that inter-parliamentary cooperation contributes to building trust, developing joint approaches to pressing problems of the present time.
Valery Mitskevich proposed to use the potential of Belarus to preserve and strengthen the food security of the ASEAN region and invited the countries of the association to set up a specialty exposition AGROASEAN at the annual Belagro international food expo.
The 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly brought together over 500 delegates from 9 member states, 17 observer parliaments and 9 international organizations.
