MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) - Belarus is utterly disappointed with the EU's decision to impose new sanctions, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, BelTA has learned.

"Belarus is absolutely disappointed with the decision by the European Union of 3 August 2023 to impose new sanctions against the Republic of Belarus. We consider this step as a continuation of the EU's unfriendly policy towards our country, another attempt at blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. It is obvious that such actions by Brussels hinder the prospects for Belarus-EU rapprochement. We emphasize once again that unilateral coercive measures directly violate international law, since only the UN Security Council is authorized to make such decisions," the statement said.

Sanctions have long proved useless and ineffective and detrimental to all parties, including the initiators of such measures, and this is absolutely obvious to all sane people.

"It is representatives of agriculture and food production industries around the world who can tell about the consequences of sanctions best of all. It was the rash and irresponsible actions by the EU and its allies that created a real threat of a food crisis on the planet," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

This issue was highlighted by Belarus’ UN Ambassador Valentin Rybakov at the UN Security Council open debate on conflict-induced famine and food insecurity yesterday.

"The inclusion in the sanctions list of large Belarusian business entities, which employ thousands of Belarusians, once again clearly illustrates the deceitful and hypocritical approaches of the European Union. The empty words of his high representatives about the alleged support of the Belarusian people are in fact not worth a penny. Brussels does not care about the rights of ordinary Belarusians at all. In reality, under the guise of beautiful slogans about democracy and human rights, the European Union cynically promotes its own narrow geopolitical interests," the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that any external attempts to restrain the country's development are initially doomed to failure. The Belarusian side reserves the right to take retaliatory measures and will continue to consistently defend the independence and sovereignty of the country, pursue an independent foreign policy, and ensure the proper level of well-being of its citizens.

"We are firmly convinced that the sanctions policy is a road to nowhere. It is fraught not only with mutual economic damage but also with a serious crisis of confidence that poses threats to the stability and security of our entire region," the ministry said.
