MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) – Ahead of the international conference of the Minsk Dialogue expert initiative Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media about the forthcoming NATO talks with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov, BelTA has learned.
According to Vladimir Makei, cooperation with the NATO, including every area of it, will be high on the agenda of the upcoming talks that are expected to take place as part of the Belarus-Russia ministerial board meeting in the near future.
“We will assess the situation on our common western borders. We, however, cannot proceed only from some hypothetical reasoning, threats or challenges. We should take a look at the real situation and decide on an adequate response,” he said.
The diplomat emphasized a need for a direct contact between the parties if there is any misunderstanding or disagreements in the military sector. “Russia and the NATO necessitate a dialogue. I believe no one needs an uncontrolled arms race today, which can lead only to the growing instability in our region. The conflicts we have today are enough and to spare. May God help us deal with them as soon as possible,” said Vladimir Makei.
“Therefore, we will hold a comprehensive talk on the situation we have on our western borders and the steps we need to take to level down any possible negative consequences,” the minister noted.
