MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Alena Kupchyna has been elected Chairperson of the European Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Over 50 delegations of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, observer countries, intergovernmental organizations and NGOs are attending the European Regional Preparatory Meeting in Vienna.
The Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will cover issues such as crime prevention strategies towards social and economic development and integrated approaches to challenges facing the criminal justice system, counter-terrorism, crime trends, the use of modern technology as a means of committing crime and as a tool against crime.
The United Nations hosts this large-scale conference once every five years. The 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to be held in Kyoto, Japan on 20-27 April 2020 will be the first of its kind after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Work of the Congress will focus on the linkages between the rule of law, effective justice and the achievement of development goals. Congresses are traditionally preceded by regional preparatory meetings, which main objective is to prepare recommendations for consideration within the framework of the Congress.
