International Association of Academies of Sciences expands its geography

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) - The International Association of Academies of Sciences is expanding its geography to include the Cuban Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, head of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) Vladimir Gusakov told the media on the sidelines of the meeting of the IAAS Council, BelTA has learned.

"About 100 foreign participants are attending the jubilee meeting. Delegations are headed by presidents or vice-presidents of academies of sciences. Everyone is interested in cooperation. They miss communication, they want to discuss the development of science in the long-term. The representation is very wide - from the CIS countries to Vietnam, Mongolia, and China. Today we intend to admit the Cuban Academy of Sciences to our association," Vladimir Gusakov said.

According to him, a declaration on the development of science of the IAAS countries until 2030 has been drafted. "We are set to hear a number of reports by the heads of delegations. They will present their results and make proposals for development. We will exchange information on both successes and unresolved problems, and outline our cooperation for the long term. We will discuss the latest challenges: digitalization, artificial intelligence, smart systems, microelectronics, biotechnology. We will also consider the climate change. Cooperation is very important for solving complex scientific problems," Vladimir Gusakov noted.

The conference is set to discuss the IAAS activities, the performance of scientific councils and setting up new ones, the admission of the new member to the IAAS and other important topics.

The International Association of Academies of Sciences includes the academies of sciences of the CIS countries and other states, universities, large scientific centers. Since 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has acted as the base academy of sciences in terms of IAAS organizational and methodological support. Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academician Vladimir Gusakov has been the head of the IAAS. The IAAS supreme governing body is the IAAS Council. The International Association of Academies of Sciences has 26 scientific councils in major scientific areas, like biology, virology, nanotechnology, geology, history, CIS studies, china studies and others.
