MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) - Belarus and Turkiye are aimed at active development of trade and economic relations, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik said at a plenary session of the Belarusian-Turkish joint intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation in Ankara on 8 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Sergei Aleinik, the interaction between Belarus and Turkiye covers a wide range of areas and is supported by political contacts and dialogue at the highest level, at the level of intergovernmental communication, inter-parliamentary communication and ministerial cooperation.

“Our today's meeting is a vivid confirmation of robust support and focus on the active development of trade and economic relations,” the minister said.

According to him, this is also evidenced by the implementation of most of the agreements and initiatives agreed upon following the 10th meeting of the commission in 2019.

“The previous period was certainly not an easy one: COVID restrictions, unprecedented sanctions pressure on Belarus from the European Union and the United States, but despite this, trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Turkiye has been developing very effectively. It is worth mentioning that we have approached the fulfillment of the strategic task set by the presidents of Belarus and Turkiye to increase mutual trade to $1.5 billion and to reduce the imbalance in mutual trade,” Sergei Aleinik said.

According to Turkiye, the trade between the two countries reached $1.6 billion in January-September 2023. “This is a clear indication that we have reached the set strategic goal, and the main thing for us is not to stop at what has been achieved, but to move forward through joint efforts,” the minister said.
