MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – Belarusian State Economic University (BSEU) and Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil have signed a memorandum of understanding, BelTA has learned.

The document was signed as a delegation of the Brazilian university Federal University of Minas Gerais visited Minsk. The delegation included the university’s Rector Sandra Regina Goulart Almeida and Director of the university’s Office of International Affairs Aziz Saliba.

Federal University of Minas Gerais is one of Latin America’s top 10 universities, one of Brazil’s top 5 universities, and is one of the world’s best universities from the point of view of education quality.

At a press conference in the Brazilian embassy in Minsk Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brazil to Belarus Bernard Jorg Leopold de Garcia Klingl mentioned the signing of bilateral documents as a milestone event and a genuine breakthrough in Belarus-Brazil cooperation in education. During the visit of the Brazilian delegation memorandums of understanding are also supposed to be signed between Federal University of Minas Gerais and Belarusian State University (BSU) and Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (BSUIR). BSU students had two weeks of internship at this university in summer as the first step of friendship.

The ambassador pointed out that the documents had been drafted and are being signed within a very short period of time – two months. Interests of the two sides were taken into account. “These are the first steps. Belarus-Brazil cooperation in education will advance in the future,” the ambassador assured.

The documents provide for exchange programs for students and professors. “The teaching of the Portuguese language for Belarusian students and the Russian language for Brazilian students will be in focus,” the ambassador noted.

UFMG Rector Sandra Regina Goulart Almeida said she believes that the signing of the memorandums opens new ways of cooperation with Belarus. She noted that tuition at the university is free and mentioned the scientific research the university does, including efforts to create Brazil’s first domestic COVID-19 vaccine.
