Belarusian MFA: Human rights long turned into tool of pressure by West

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) - Accusations of violation of the paper-based human rights standards have long become a tool of pressure for the West, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Ambrazevich said at a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, BelTA has learned.

"Have human rights helped the world become less conflictual and more harmonious? Unfortunately, contrary to the original idea, the year 2023, which was the anniversary year for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, witnessed a record high number of regional armed conflicts in the world over the past 30 years. The concept of human rights has played a significant negative role in this deplorable result. After all, accusations of violating the utopian paper-based standards in the field of human rights have long been used by Western countries to put pressure and discredit opponents," Yuri Ambrazevich said.

According to him, due to their dominance in the international economy and in the international media landscape, the United States and the European Union countries use human rights as a pretext for interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign and independent states, for imposing economic and other restrictions against disagreeable countries.

“It is obvious that such actions by the West directly violate the rights of ordinary people in the ‘punished’ countries. The perniciousness of such policies for the general climate of international relations is aggravated by the double standards that the West applies to human rights, justifying its satellites. Thus, human rights in their international dimension have long been a cause for strife and conflict instead of unification,” the deputy minister of foreign affairs said.

The diplomat emphasized that this role of human rights only exacerbates the dire situation in terms of the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
