MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) - The Belarusian delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik has arrived in South Africa to take part in the 15th edition of the BRICS summit, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Belarus is taking part in the forum of such a level for the first time. BRICS currently accounts for 42% of the world's population and 31.5% of the world GDP (which is higher than the G7 countries, whose GDP is 30.7% of the world’s GDP), about 20% of global trade and 25% of FDI.

“Such impressive potential of the BRICS creates the necessary prerequisites for the development and adoption of effective solutions to the global challenges facing the international community today. BRICS is already a self-sufficient and strong club of independent players pursuing independent policies with a common commitment to the values of equal dialogue and cooperation,” the ministry said.

BelTA learned about the plans of the Belarusian delegation headed by Sergei Aleinik to take part in the BRICS summit in the Republic of South Africa from Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz.

“We have a corresponding invitation, and our delegation is set to go there. We are totally on board with the key theme of the upcoming summit, which is “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism.” Belarus will take part in the events of this summit for the first time,” Anatoly Glaz noted.

He specified that Belarus will participate in the BRICS Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue that will be held in Johannesburg.

The head of the Belarusian delegation will use this opportunity to meet with colleagues from a number of other countries on the sidelines of the summit.
